Dated Poem

Dream to Wake

…the neighbours are religiously friendly;
they come by at odd hours:
midnight, a knock…then we’re having punch
and eating the word. I’m asleep by then.

In my dreams I say: “it’s safe, we’re ok.”
Then, our only cries are for pleasure.
Sighs…then knocks.
The neighbours.

I’m pissed and drinking tea.
My mother looks forlorn, and
vexed is prodding me. I tell them
come at a reasonable hour, at the top
of my voice which breaks.

They leave scared and embarrassed.
Next, I’m seeing bananas everywhere,
then I’m making love. Then I know.
I say “wake up” and open my eyes.
